10 tips on keeping a clean garage

Are you having trouble keeping a clean garage? Don’t let your belongings gather and mount up in your garage. Make this an area that is easy to work in by following these 10 tips on garage organization:

  • Buy glass jars: Put all of your screws, nuts and bolts into glass jars on your workbench. Not only could these things be potentially dangerous if one was to trip over them, but they also add to an overall cluttered appearance if they are left rolling around on workbench counters.
  • Make a pegboard: Hang garden and building tools against hooks in a pegboard against the wall.
  • Throw out the old stuff: If your garage is filled with old furniture, children’s toys and unused bicycles, it’s no wonder you’re having trouble keeping a clean garage. Sell some of the items that take up space or give it away to a good home.
  • Implement monthly clean ups: If you can’t get everyone in your household to commit to “clean garage rules”, have a monthly clean up where unused items on the garage floor get put in a box.
  • Use your garden shed: Many people have garden sheds that don’t get used (because keeping things within an arm’s reach in the garage is simply more convenient). Keep garden tools and equipment in your garage shed.
  • Store seasonal equipment elsewhere: If your fertilizer and vegetable garden seeds only get used once a year, keep them in cupboards or boxes.
  • Make a map: Make a list of everything in your garage and where it is kept. This inventory will help find missing items more quickly.
  • Add some decorating: You don’t have to hang chandeliers or paintings in the garage, but painting your cabinets, pegboard and workbench can contribute to a neater-looking garage.
  • Allow light into the garage: If you’ve got a few windows in the garage, don’t cover them with boxes. Let the light in to help with ventilation and make the area brighter.
  • Make shelves: A workbench doesn’t provide enough space for all your equipment, so create shelves that can manage the weight of bulky tools and other items in your garage.
